The town of Shuri in Okinawa. The owner of a small movie theater is struggling to save his traditional establishment. Fewer and fewer visitors are flocking to his screenings, while the ordinary people of the neighborhood face the problems of their everyday lives. Together, they manage not to lose their confidence. In two touching episodes (Echoes Of A Dream and Spring Of The Phoenix), Wings Of A Phoenix takes a loving look at the inhabitants of the old island capital of the kingdom of Ryūkyū. From the ashes of the ruins of Shuri Castle, hope for a common future rises like a phoenix.

Making of
Regisseur Tsukasa Kishimoto, geboren 1968 auf der Insel Okinawa, wurde durch die Darstellung der Lebenswirklichkeit der Menschen seiner Heimat („10ROOMS“) bekannt. 2019 gewann er mit seinem Film Okinawan Blue den Jury-Preis des 20. JFFH. Mit Wings of the Phoenix präsentiert er nun zwei durch das Lokalkolorit der Stadt Shuri geprägte Geschichten. Im Schatten des 2019 abgebrannten Schlosses Shuri gelingt Kishimoto im Auf und Ab der Treppen, im Spannungsfeld von Erfolg und Scheitern, ein poetisches kleines Meisterwerk, das mit seinen leisen zwischenmenschlichen Tönen das Publikum begeistert.
