Tokyo Girl And Boy
Tōkyō no furugiya
The job seems so simple: a quick burglary, pick up the stolen goods and get out of there. But things turn out very differently for the three young gangsters Nico, Narita and Jo. Not only is the item they are looking for kept in an uncrackable safe, but somehow they also kill the owner in the heat of the moment. As if that weren't enough, the trio - just one stolen car later - is also expanded into a quartet by a tied-up woman. This is only the beginning of a twisty escape odyssey, where despite fear and anger, there is still enough room for friendship and the luxury of idleness.
The Japanese film proves again and again that growing bonds of friendship in the midst of dark times of crisis is exactly its subject. Tokyo Girl and Boy mixes small-town drama, buddy comedy and milieu study with great sensitivity. The predominantly nocturnal Tokyo serves as a pulsating fifth main character. In addition to the imponderables and the interesting plot branches, the exciting dialogues of the true-to-life characters, the fabulous lighting, the masterful camerawork and a soundtrack that knocks you out cold are captivating.
