Summary
11-year old Mahito has to leave Tokyo after his mother’s death during an air raid. He moves in with his father and his new wife into an old mansion on a huge manor. Isolated from the world Mahito begins exploring the magical landscapes surrounding his new home and encounters a mysterious grey heron, who refuses to leave his side. As time goes by the grey heron becomes Mahito’s guide who helps him understand his surroundings better and reveal the secrets of life.

Hayao Miyazaki, born on January 5, 1941 in Tokyo has an almost mythical status amongst the world’s great filmmakers. His Studio Ghibli is regarded as Japan’s answer to Disney and revered by the greats of western cinema like Steven Spielberg and John Lasseter. His films are regularly shown at the big high-rank festivals like the Berlinale, where he won the Golden Bear for “Spirited Away” in 2002 after entering the competition for the first time in 1998 with “Princess Mononoke”. “Spirited Away” later also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
